trunk dendrometer

DE-1T dendrometer for trunks >7 cm diameter

overview

The DE-1T Dendrometer is a highly precise incremental LVDT-based sensor for monitoring micro-variations of trunk radius in micron range.

The DE-1T is ideal for correlating tree trunk or stem diameter variations against environmental variables, or tree water use of water potential, for a complete and comprehensive analysis of tree physiology.

Edaphic Scientific supplies the DE-1T complete with pre-programmed data loggers for a quick and easy installation. Alternatively, we can assist you in connecting the DE-1T to your own, existing data logging system.

Figure 1A. Three days of dendrometer data.

Plant growth and water balance affect diurnal behaviour of trunk radius. The growth rate depends on a vegetation stage and environmental conditions. The diurnal variations represent mostly fluctuations of water content in plants. Two radius-based indices are commonly used for evaluating plant water status: daily contraction amplitude and trend of daily maxima. The DE-1T Dendrometer allows investigating effects of irrigation rate and other environmental factors on water balance and growth of plants.

The DE-1T Dendrometer includes a linear displacement transducer (LVDT) mounted on a special rod with threaded end. When the rod is anchored inside the trunk, the LVDT represents the movement of trunk surface. Thus, the output signal follows variations of distance between trunk surface and the end of the rod, which is anchored inside the trunk.

A signal conditioner provides excitation of the LVDT and production of standard linear output signal.

The probe is connected by a standard 1-meter cable to the waterproof box with the signal conditioner inside.

The output cable length should be specified in the order if required.

Edaphic Scientific is a one-stop shop for a whole system monitoring solution. We provide plant and soil monitoring systems for researchers and growers including wireless, LoRaWAN and modem options.

Our systems not only support dendrometers, but related sensors such as sap flow, soil moisture, weather parameters, and more.

At Edaphic Scientific we want to work with you from the start of your project through to its completion. We can provide:

  • Assistance with project and experimental design
  • Procurement of all monitoring equipment, including sensors, data loggers and data management software. Edaphic Scientific is a one-stop shop where we can source and find any necessary equipment for your project from our preferred suppliers or third party suppliers
  • Installation and training
  • On-going assistance with data interpretation and equipment maintenance
  • Data correction and analysis, including statistical analysis with the R-package
  • Report and publication preparation including tables, figures, graphs, and manuscript writing

advanced data collection and management solutions

Edaphic Scientific recognises the need for flexible and adaptable sensor and data logging solutions for experimental or environmental monitoring projects.

Data can be downloaded directly in the field from data loggers. A direct connection between the data loggers and your computer, via a USB cable, can be used for manual downloading of data.

Alternatively, data can be downloaded over the internet on your iPhone, iPad or desktop computer with the Eagle.io cloud-based, data management software solutions. Through this remote based downloading capabilities, you can download, view and manage your data, and system, anywhere in the world and at anytime.
